Challenge Discovery has a rich 30-year history. Over time, the organization has grown, changed and evolved. However, our methodologies and traditions have stayed the same. One of those traditions is the Challenge Discovery Pin. Throughout the team building program, our participants experience, learn, grow and change. They are pushed out of their comfort zone and into their learning zone. And at the end of the day, we hope they’ll walk away with more than just a memory. So, when they leave, they are given a pin. There are many important aspects of this pin that serve as a reminder of their experience.
It’s all in the name
Our name is engraved on the pin because we hope participants will remember us as having been the host of the event. Not only that, but when you meet other people that have a Challenge Discovery pin, you can relate on shared experiences. Although every program is completely customized based on the goals of the group, the Challenge Discovery brand relates to effective teamwork, personal behaviors and possibilities for change.

Experience, Learn, Grow + Change
On the pin is the acronym E.L.G.C. which stands for Experience, Learn, Grow and Change. This is what happens during our programs. Participants have an experience, on an individual level and a group level. Through these experiences, participants learn, not only about themselves, but about their team. With this learning comes growth. Growth from individual actions and newly built relationships. After the experiences, change occurs. This change happens in a single initiative, upon leaving the program with a pin. This is what makes us unique.
Can you think of a time when you were forced to grow whether it be a new relationship, problem, or situation?
Comfort Zones
Then there are the three circles of the comfort zone. At Challenge Discovery, we don’t believe that participants are either in or out of their comfort zone. They are in their comfort zone, learning zone, or panic zone. Our goal is to get participants into the learning zone. We hope that participants can help their peers out of the panic zone by going back into the learning zone, and not running back to their comfort zone. The learning zone is where confidence builds and competency with the unknown occurs.
Getting out of your comfort zone is tough, but do you think it helps you to become a better person?
Segments
Within the learning zone are 12 segments. As your program facilitator, we hope that our mission lasts well beyond the day on the course or in the school gym. We ask groups to keep this pin on them for 12 days, and reflect on their experience. Sure, wearing it each day requires some effort, but it serves as a powerful reminder of the experience.
Compass
Lastly, the center of the pin displays a compass. We often ask our groups, “where will you go from here?”. Our programs are not about swinging on ropes, they are about the learning that happens and experiences that are built in the process. Our hope is that these will apply to other areas in life.
What kinds of things to do you want to experience in life and how do you think building teamwork at Challenge Discovery can help you on your journey?

Are you ready to get pinned?
The tradition of the pin is a great way to wrap up the day. It’s an opportunity for participants to reflect on what has happened in the past two to five hours. It’s a lifelong reminder of a unique experience.
